Located on the lands of the Dunghutti people in South West Rocks, Greybox demonstrates how a contemporary coastal residence can strengthen connections between people, place and ecology. Set within a suburban context on the Mid North Coast of NSW, the project responds directly to the region’s unique environmental character, drawing inspiration from the surrounding coastal wetlands, coastal heath, coastal littoral rainforest pockets and resilient dune vegetation.

Greybox is an experiment in living with the landscape. Instead of a peripheral element, landscape becomes the organising structure of the home, shaping movement, outlook and daily life. A series of pavilions are arranged around a central courtyard and three-sided verandah, encouraging outdoor living and a deeper engagement with seasonal change. This approach reduces reliance on mechanical cooling while maximising shade, natural ventilation and connection to the coastal climate.

 The planting strategy draws inspiration from local coastal ecosystems, with Banksia integrifolia, Pandanus tectorius and other habitat-forming native species establishing the ecological framework. Layered shrubs, grasses, ferns and groundcovers provide shelter and food for birds and pollinators, while carefully integrated subtropical species reinforce the coastal character and microclimate. Client-propagated frangipanis embed memory and personal connection, while productive gardens and bush tucker species support seasonal harvesting, everyday rituals and sharing with neighbours.
